2006-2008

2006

  • Patti Lyons retired as President and CEO.
  • Appointment of Dr. Geraldine Marullo as the Foundation’s second President and CEO .
  • Childhope Asia Philippines ex-street kids trained other workers, comic books featuring street educators and their stories are published.
  • 25 partnering NGOs and local governments now trained in using the Adolescent Reproduction Health Learning Manual.
  • With the passage of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act, the Foundation began piloting three models of human service programs that use restorative justice principles for children discharged from adult prison; it will also refocus its other programs for children to incorporate delinquency prevention strategies.
  • Donated ensemble of Muslim drums helped reaped a real livelihood for a group of indigenous Muslim youth in Mindanao.

    partner Notre Dame Foundation for Charitable Activities, Inc. Women
    in Enterprise Development (NDFCAI-WED) turned a training program
    into a real livelihood for a group of indigenous young people.

  • Began working with 16 Hawai‘i non-profit organizations, created as the Hawai‘i Partner Network, to create a service delivery and learning community.
  • Created a pilot program with the University of Hawai‘i School of Social Work and arranged a service-learning experience in the Philippines for two graduate students.
  • Seven families out of 12 in the Kealahou demonstration project completed rebuilding their homes.

2007

  • Board of Directors made its 17th trip to the Philippines and visited the southernmost part, the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARRM) and Zamboanga City. The five-day trip included visits to the islands of Suba, Jolo, and Basilan where armed conflict is a way of life.

  • The Board visited the island community of Suba where the majority of families
    are Badjaos. Known as “sea gypsies”, they live on the sea and make their
    livelihood from the sea, mostly growing seaweed. They are among the Philippines’ poorest of the poor.

  • Funded the construction of two school buildings for the Badjao children in Jolo and Suba in the Sulu province of ARRM.
  • Consuelo Partners in the Philippines have their first meeting with new CEO Geri Marullo and roll out a new strategic plan, adopted by the Board.

2008

  • A year-long celebration is launched as Consuelo Foundation observes its 20th anniversary and begins a new era of giving hope.
