In 1940, a Manila newspaper reported, “Consuelo Zobel, daughter of Enrique Zobel de Ayala of Ermita, married Lieutenant James Dyce Alger, U.S. Army.” A young American from Massachusetts, Jim Alger was a West Point graduate stationed in the Philippines. Jim and Consuelo’s courtship conformed to strict Spanish standards. Their military marriage took place at her family’s home with newspapers calling it one of Manila’s most outstanding social affairs.
