In Hawai‘i, Consuelo’s directive was to operate programs to reduce child abuse, assist disadvantaged women, and to strengthen families and neighborhoods. The Foundation’s first operating project was Ke Aka Ho‘ona in Wai‘anae, O‘ahu, a self-help housing project that took 10 years to complete. 75 families among Hawai‘i’s working poor built their own homes and created a community committed to exist without violence, abuse or drugs.
